The Origin of the Zodiac Sign Cancer
A journey through mythology and the stars
The Crab
The zodiac sign Cancer, spanning from approximately June 21 to July 22, is one of the oldest constellations. Its origins are deeply rooted in ancient mythology and astronomical observation.
In The Stars
The constellation Cancer, Latin for "Crab," is a relatively faint constellation in the night sky. It lies between Gemini to the west and Leo to the east. Its most famous deep-sky object is the Beehive Cluster (Praesepe), a star cluster visible to the naked eye that was used as a weather predictor in ancient times.
Greek Mythology
The most common myth associates Cancer with the crab sent by the goddess Hera to distract Hercules during his second labor, the battle with the Lernaean Hydra. According to the tale, the crab was crushed underfoot by Hercules, but Hera, grateful for its effort, placed its image among the stars.
Mesopotamian Roots
Long before Greek tales, the Babylonians identified this constellation as "The Crab." Some earlier interpretations suggest it may have been depicted as a turtle or a water beetle. The Sumerians called it "The Great Gate," where souls passed between heaven and earth.
Astrological Symbolism
In astrology, Cancer is a water sign, ruled by the Moon. It is associated with emotions, intuition, home, and family. The glyph ♋ is often said to represent the claws of a crab or the breasts, symbolizing nurturing. The crab's hard shell and soft interior perfectly mirror the Cancerian personality: protective and sensitive.
The Tale of Hercules and the Crab
During the epic battle between Hercules and the multi-headed Hydra, the goddess Hera, who despised the hero, sent a giant crab to aid the monster. The crab emerged from the swamp, snapping at Hercules' feet to hinder him. Without breaking focus, Hercules, with his immense strength, crushed the crab under his heel.
Despite its failure, Hera honored the crab's loyalty and sacrifice by granting it a place in the celestial sphere, forever immortalized as the constellation Cancer.
