The Myth of Capricorn
Exploring the ancient legend behind the Sea-Goat constellation and its celestial drawing.
The Legend of the Sea-Goat
In the tapestry of the night sky, the constellation Capricornus depicts a mythical creature with the forebody of a goat and the tail of a fish. This unique form originates from one of the most fascinating tales in Greek mythology.
The myth centers on Pan, the god of the wild, nature, and rustic music. During a great battle between the gods and the monstrous Typhon, Pan, in a moment of terror, attempted to transform into a fish and leap into the river Nile to escape. His transformation was hasty and incomplete, resulting in the hybrid form of a goat above the water and a fish below.
To honor Pan's quick thinking (or his amusing panic), Zeus placed this peculiar form among the stars as the Capricorn constellation. Another version links the constellation to Amalthea, the she-goat who nursed the infant Zeus, whose broken horn became the Cornucopia, or Horn of Plenty.
Capricorn thus symbolizes ambition, resilience, and resourcefulness, blending the mountain goat's determination to climb to the greatest heights with the fish's intuitive depth and adaptability.
