The Zodiac: Cancer
The Crab in Greek Mythology
The Celestial Crab
In the tapestry of the night sky, the constellation Cancer, the Crab, holds a subtle but significant place. Its story is intertwined with one of the greatest labors of the legendary hero Heracles (Hercules).
The Myth of Heracles and the Hydra
During Heracles' second labor to slay the multi-headed Lernaean Hydra, the goddess Hera, who despised the hero, sent a giant crab to aid the monstrous serpent. The crab emerged from the swamp, snapping at Heracles' feet to distract him.
With swift and immense strength, Heracles crushed the crab under his foot. Despite its failure, Hera, acknowledging the crab's loyalty and effort, placed its image among the stars as the constellation Cancer.
Cancerian Traits from the Myth
- Protective: Like the crab defending its home, Cancerians are fiercely protective of their loved ones.
- Nurturing: The crab carries its shell (home) everywhere, symbolizing Cancer's deep need for security and family.
- Tenacious: The crab's pincers represent a strong grip on emotions, memories, and goals.
- Emotional Depth: Ruled by the Moon, their emotions, like the tide, can ebb and flow with great depth.
