Why Does the Zodiac Start With Aries?
Exploring the Celestial Beginning of the Astrological Wheel
The Zodiac Wheel
The zodiac is a circle of twelve 30-degree divisions of celestial longitude that are centered upon the ecliptic—the apparent path of the Sun across the celestial sphere over the course of the year. This circle has a starting point, and in Western astrology, that starting point is the sign of Aries.
The Astronomical Reason
The zodiac begins with Aries because of the Vernal Equinox. In ancient times, when astrology was being formalized in Mesopotamia and later in Hellenistic Greece, astronomers observed that at the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun appeared against the backdrop of the constellation Aries.
This point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward is called the "First Point of Aries". It marked the beginning of the astrological new year and was considered a time of rebirth, new beginnings, and initiation—qualities strongly associated with the Aries archetype.
Although due to precession of the equinoxes the Sun now appears in Pisces during the Vernal Equinox, Western astrology maintains the tropical zodiac system which remains fixed to the seasons, keeping Aries as the starting point aligned with the spring equinox.
Symbolic Significance
Aries, ruled by Mars, represents beginnings, initiative, courage, and the spark of life. Starting the zodiac with Aries aligns with the natural cycle of rebirth in spring. Each sign builds upon the lessons of the previous one, creating a cyclical journey of human experience.
- Cardinal Quality: Aries is a cardinal sign, representing initiation and action.
- Fire Element: As a fire sign, Aries symbolizes the primal spark of creation.
- Mythological Alignment: In mythology, the ram (symbol of Aries) often represents leadership and pioneering spirit.
- Astrological New Year: Many astrological traditions celebrate the Sun's entry into Aries as the start of the astrological year.
The Complete Cycle
From the impulsive beginnings of Aries to the transcendent completion of Pisces, the zodiac tells a story of human development. Aries starts this journey with raw energy and self-focused drive, which then evolves through the other signs, each adding layers of complexity, until the cycle completes and begins anew.
This cyclical nature mirrors natural patterns in our world—seasons, life cycles, and cosmic rhythms—reminding us that every ending contains the seed of a new beginning, just as Pisces flows back into Aries.
