Capricorn & The Shifting Sky
Exploring the Celestial Sea-Goat and Precessional Drift
The Sea-Goat Constellation
Capricornus, one of the oldest recognized constellations, is depicted as a mythical hybrid—a sea-goat with the forequarters of a goat and the tail of a fish. This symbol originates from ancient Babylonian and Sumerian mythology, often associated with the god of wisdom and waters. It resides in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere, nestled within the "sea" of constellations, near Aquarius and Pisces.
While commonly linked to a tropical zodiac sign, the astronomical constellation itself is a fixed pattern of stars, with Delta Capricorni being its brightest beacon.
The Great Shift: Precession of the Equinoxes
The backdrop of stars against which the Sun rises slowly changes over millennia due to a wobble in Earth's rotation called axial precession. This 25,800-year cycle causes the Sun's position at the equinox to gradually drift westward through the constellations.
Thousands of years ago, the Sun was in the constellation Capricornus during the December solstice. Today, due to this precessional shift, it appears in Sagittarius. This is the distinction between the sidereal (constellation-based) and tropical (season-based) zodiacs.
Capricornus, like all constellations, participates in this grand celestial dance, slowly changing its relationship to our calendar over vast epochs.
