Zodiac Pisces: Dreamy Watercolor Painting Tutorial
Capture the mystical and intuitive essence of the fish with this easy, step-by-step guide.
The Pisces Spirit
Pisces, the final sign of the zodiac, is associated with dreams, intuition, compassion, and the subconscious. Our painting will use flowing shapes, soft blues, and ethereal lavender to reflect this watery, imaginative energy.
You Will Need
- Watercolor paper (cold press, 140lb)
- Watercolor paints: Cerulean Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lavender, Silver
- Round and flat brushes (sizes 6 and 10)
- Jar of clean water
- Paper towels or a cloth
- Pencil and eraser
- White gel pen or gouache (for stars)
Painting Steps
Sketch the Flow
Lightly pencil two mirrored, flowing fish shapes, symbolizing the dual nature of Pisces. Connect them with a faint, wavy line. Don't worry about perfection—soft, organic lines are key.
The First Watery Wash
Wet the entire paper lightly. Using a large brush, apply a very diluted wash of Cerulean Blue across the page, leaving some white spaces for clouds and light. Let it flow freely.
Define the Forms
While still damp, add gentle strokes of Phthalo Blue along the outlines of the fish and the connecting wave. Allow the colors to bleed softly into the background, creating a dreamy effect.
Add Ethereal Highlights
Mix a touch of Lavender with lots of water. Dab this color into the centers of the fish and in swirls around them. This represents Piscean intuition and magic.
Final Touches & Stars
Let the painting dry completely. Use a white gel pen to dot tiny stars and constellations around the scene. Add a subtle shimmer to the fish scales with a very light touch of diluted silver.
Piscean Tip
Embrace the unpredictable nature of watercolor, just as Pisces embraces the flow of emotion. "Mistakes" often lead to beautiful, unexpected textures. Let your intuition guide your brush.
