Mythological Background
In Greek mythology, Leo represents the Nemean Lion, a fearsome beast with an impenetrable hide that was slain by Hercules during his first labor. After its defeat, the lion was placed among the stars by Zeus as a constellation. The Babylonians also recognized this constellation as a lion over 4,000 years ago.
The constellation's brightest star, Regulus, has been known as the "Heart of the Lion" since ancient times and was considered one of the four royal stars in Persian astronomy.
