Aries: How It Became About The Ram
The story behind the first sign of the zodiac.
The Ram
The constellation and sign of Aries have been associated with a ram since ancient times. But how did this spirited, cardinal fire sign get its iconic symbol? The story is written in the stars of mythology.
The Golden Ram of Greek Myth
The primary origin lies in the Greek legend of the Golden Ram.
King Athamas was commanded to sacrifice his children, Phrixus and Helle. Their divine mother, Nephele, sent a magical, flying ram with golden fleece to rescue them.
While Helle fell into the sea (giving name to the Hellespont), Phrixus safely reached the land of Colchis. In gratitude, he sacrificed the ram to Zeus and hung its Golden Fleece in a sacred grove, guarded by a dragon—setting the stage for Jason's later quest.
To honor its bravery, Zeus placed the ram's image among the stars, creating the constellation Aries.

From Constellation to Zodiac Sign
1 The Sun's Path
In ancient Babylonian astronomy, the constellation Aries marked the location of the vernal equinox, the start of spring and the new year. This point was known as "the house of the ram."
2 A Shift in Symbolism
While the equinox has since moved into Pisces due to precession, Aries retained its astrological meaning. It became the first sign, embodying beginnings, initiative, and raw energy—much like a ram charging forward.
3 The Essence of Aries
The ram symbolizes the core Aries traits: courage, leadership, and a pioneering spirit. Those born under this sign are often seen as natural-born starters, unafraid to take action and forge new paths.
The Spirit of the Ram
Cardinal Fire

Ruling Planet: Mars
Mars, the god of war, fuels the Aries drive, courage, and desire to conquer challenges.
