Cancer: The Crab
The Nurturing Water Sign of the Zodiac
The Constellation
The Cancer constellation is one of the faintest in the zodiac, located between Gemini to the west and Leo to the east. It is best seen in the northern hemisphere during early spring. Its most famous deep-sky object is the open star cluster known as Praesepe, or the Beehive Cluster.
Mythology & Symbolism
In Greek mythology, Cancer is associated with the crab sent by Hera to distract Hercules during his fight with the Lernaean Hydra. Despite being crushed, the crab's loyalty was placed in the sky by Hera. The crab symbolizes protection, tenacity, and a hard exterior shielding a soft interior—core traits of the Cancer personality.
