The Story Behind Aries
The First Sign of the Zodiac
🔥 The Myth of the Ram
The story of Aries is rooted in the Greek myth of the Golden Ram. King Athamas of Boeotia had two children, Phrixus and Helle. Their stepmother, Ino, plotted against them, leading to a famine and a false oracle demanding their sacrifice.
Their real mother, the cloud nymph Nephele, sent a magical, flying ram with golden fleece to rescue them. The ram carried the siblings across the sea. Though Helle fell (giving name to the Hellespont), Phrixus reached safety in Colchis. In gratitude, he sacrificed the ram to Zeus and hung its Golden Fleece in a sacred grove, guarded by a dragon—a treasure later sought by Jason and the Argonauts.
Zeus placed the ram's image among the stars as the constellation Aries, honoring its courage and sacrifice.
