Mythological Origins
In Greek mythology, Leo represents the Nemean Lion, a fearsome beast with an impenetrable hide that was slain by Heracles as the first of his twelve labors. After its death, the lion was placed among the stars by Zeus to commemorate the heroic feat.
The constellation has been recognized by various cultures throughout history. Ancient Egyptians worshipped lion deities, while Babylonians called it "UR.GU.LA" meaning "the great lion."
