The name Cancer originates from Latin, meaning "crab". In ancient astronomy, the constellation Cancer was observed as a pattern of stars that early stargazers, including the Greeks and Romans, imagined to resemble a crab.

This constellation is one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac, the band of the sky through which the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to travel. Those born between approximately June 21 and July 22 fall under this zodiac sign.

In mythology, the crab is associated with the story of Hercules and the Hydra, sent by Hera but crushed underfoot, later placed in the stars by the goddess.

The Medical Terminology

The disease cancer was named by the father of medicine, Hippocrates (c. 460–370 BC). He used the Greek terms karkinos (crab) and karkinoma to describe tumors.

This nomenclature was inspired by the appearance of certain malignant tumors. The swollen blood vessels around a tumor reminded Hippocrates and later physicians of a crab's legs, while the hard, central mass resembled the crab's body.

The Roman physician Celsus later translated the Greek term into the Latin word cancer, which means crab. Thus, the medical condition inherited the name of the zodiac sign and the animal it represents.
